What did the Olympic opening teach us about advertising. The opening ceremony could be seen as a three hour brand ad for the Olympics. Watched by a billion people worldwide it was probably the equivalent of a £2 billion ad campaign. Its role, to set the scene for the entire London Olympics. So what can we learn from it? Here’s a starter for ten:

1. Great film directors can tell stories brilliantly
2. Creativity makes things much more interesting
3. Being different works
4. Ideas can make a budget go further… a £27 million production spend vs Bejings £67 million
5. A brilliant bit of entertainment can completely change perceptions… the Olympics went from negative to positive overnight
6. A great launch ad makes people feel amazing
7. Great ads have a point of view… in this case quite a left-wing one!
8. Humour makes brands more loveable and more memorable
9. If there’s enough will and passion for a project, it’s amazing what can happen
10. Real talent makes a real difference
