Creme Egg releases goo and photo apps

by John Reynolds, marketingmagazine.co.uk 11-Mar-10, 15:53

LONDON - Cadbury's Creme Egg is launching two free iPhone apps as part of its digital marketing campaign in an effort to drive up sales.

The first, called Scramble the Egg, is an interactive app which invites users to shake a virtual Creme Egg around the screen, until the egg becomes so excited it bursts its goo all over the screen. Users can also slide and spread the goo around the screen with their fingers.

The second app, called Egg Marks the Spot, encourages people to visit one of 38 landmarks in the UK and Ireland, including Edinburgh Castle and the London Eye.

The app uses the iPhone's GPS to guide people to their nearest landmark, where they are supposed to use their cameraphone to take a picture of the landmark. A Creme Egg is superimposed over the picture and users can move it around the screen.

Users can also click through to www.cremeegg.com to see if they have won a daily giveaway prize.

Both apps are free to download. Once downloaded, the applications will still be accessible after the Creme Egg season finishes on 4 April.

The apps have taken their lead from Cadbury's 'Your country needs goo' digital campaign launched earlier this year.

German artists attach GPS device to Google Street View car - hilarity ensues

by bogdans 8. February 2010 17:44

Want to know where the Google Street View car is? In the UK, there was a collaborative effort to track it through pictures and crowdsourced maps when it was over here collecting the pictures for Google Nostalgia (ah, those days when Woolworths was open).

But a team of German artist-pranksters - the self-assigned Free Art & Technology group - has done rather better: while the Street View car was idling outside their offices, they nipped over and attached a GPS device to it.

The result: for a while on Sunday you could see in real time just where it was, and the group also generated a map showing where it had been. (Or see the really large map.)

Much hilarity ensued, although Google obviously got wise to it and seem to have removed it. (Either that or they've been parked since Sunday, which seems unlikely.)

The fabulous irony being their instruction to people to: "Come help us find and tell your friends about the evils being committed by Google's streetviews car and crew."

Which they've plotted on a ... Google Map.

Avatar - getting it in perspective

by philipb 27. January 2010 08:51

James Cameron broke his own record Tuesday. With a $1.86 billion haul, Avatar passed Titanic to become the highest grossing movie of all time at the box office worldwide.

It’s a remarkable achievement. But before every Hollywood studio exec decides that all future movies must be in 3-D and feature blue aliens, it's worth getting a little perspective on the film.

Avatar has the advantage of showing in 3-D (which usually commands an average $3 extra per ticket) and coming out at a time wheneven 2-D movie tickets are more expensive than ever. According to the National Association of Theater Owners, the average ticket price in 2008 was $7.18, up 56% from prices in 1997 when Titanic was in theaters.

A look at domestic grosses adjusted for inflation shows a more realistic view of Avatar’s performance.

In the U.S., Avatar has grossed $555 million, making it the second highest grossing domestic (as opposed to worldwide) film of all time. Titanic is temporarily still in the lead here with $600.8 million.

But a chart adjusting for ticket price inflation on the Web site Box Office Mojo ranks Avatar as the 26th highest grossing film in the U.S. of all time. Gone With The Wind tops this list with a $1.5 billion adjusted gross in the U.S., while Star Wars ranks second with $1.3 billion.

Cameron’s Titanic ranks sixth (just behind The Ten Commandments) with an adjusted $943 million take in the U.S.

With no film on the near horizon poised to challenge Avatar’s dominance, the film is sure to continue to mint money. But it’s got a way to go to catch up with a classic like Gone With The Wind.
