Israeli boffins have invented a computer that can perform 330 trillion operations per second, more than 100,000 times the speed of the fastest PC. And here's the science bit: it runs on DNA. Researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science have fashioned a programmable molecular computing machine from enzymes and DNA molecules instead of silicon microchips. There is no mechanical device, no silicon, no transistors, indeed no electricity. The DNA acts as the software, while the enzyme act as the hardware. Once mixed in a test tube the resulting reaction enables you to perform rudimentary functions. The data is extrapolated from the length of the DNA molecule.  Next time, you look at a toadstool or a frog, just think the next Mac may be locked therein.
